TAA procurement
SAS-1U-HL8 is listed by MagStor as TAA compliant. For purchases with Trade Agreements Act requirements, ask MagStor for model-specific documentation and confirmation of the exact supplied configuration before ordering.
Review the exact hardware configuration and procurement documentation against your purchasing requirements; accessories and added devices do not automatically inherit the drive’s status.
Built around your workflow
The SAS-1U-HL8 combines LTO-8 tape storage with 6Gb/s SAS connectivity in a 1U rackmount format. Install the completed enclosure with clear ventilation and compatible power, host connections, drivers and tape software.
Model-specific capabilities
6Gb/s SAS connectivity; verify the host adapter, cabling, drivers and software as one configuration.
Use suitable rack hardware and preserve the enclosure ventilation.
Use media supported by the selected LTO generation and retain a separate compatible drive for older tapes when required.
Match the purchased SKU, drive count, host and application. See the model details and included items below.

Use a tape-qualified, non-RAID SAS HBA, a correctly matched external SFF-8644 cable and supported drivers. Windows, macOS or Linux support depends on the complete host, adapter and application combination. Verify current compatibility rather than relying on connector fit alone.
The 1U enclosure requires independent AC power; the SAS cable does not power the drive. Use the supplied rack mounting kit with a suitable 19-inch rack, verify loading and fit, and keep ventilation unobstructed.
Install compatible backup, archive or LTFS software for LTO-8, your operating system and required media format. Confirm support for the drive, host adapter, drivers and media you plan to use. Each application has its own operating-system requirements and licensing.
Native tape throughput of up to 300 MB/s requires sustained source-storage, host and application performance. Fast local SSD/NVMe staging, suitable RAID or a fast end-to-end network can help maintain streaming. A 1GbE source is below the maximum native rate of one drive before overhead. Test representative jobs rather than relying on burst speeds.
Keep ventilation clear and avoid condensation, dust and rapid environmental changes. Follow the exact drive, enclosure and media operating limits. Confirm model-specific temperature and relative-humidity limits before installation.
Choose compatible backup, archive or LTFS software, retain catalogs and any encryption keys, and test restores. Confirm application and initiator licensing separately.
Offline by design
LTO uses removable cartridges for long-term backup and archive copies. After writing and verifying your data, eject the cartridge and store it separately from connected systems. This physical separation supports air-gapped retention, offsite rotation and protection from threats that reach online storage.
Keep physical control of retained data without recurring cloud capacity charges for those tape copies.
Media is designed for a shelf life of up to 30 years under recommended storage conditions. Follow the cartridge’s handling and storage guidance.
For procurement that requires TAA compliance, confirm the required configuration with MagStor before ordering.
Main features
Unload verified media to retain a physically offline copy separate from the connected host.
Choose compatible software for the required file-based archive or managed backup workflow.
Plan cartridge labeling, catalogs, verification and periodic restore tests.
Match the drive, interface, host, drivers, software and media format as one workflow.
Use the supported enclosure and installation requirements for this exact configuration.
Contact MagStor with the SKU and serial number for setup, firmware and troubleshooting questions.
| Data cartridge | Native capacity | Support |
|---|---|---|
| LTO-8 | 12TB | Read / write |
| LTO-7 | 6TB | Read / write |
| LTO-9 / LTO-10 | Not applicable | Not compatible |
Plan storage using native capacity. LTO-8 offers up to 30TB and LTO-7 up to 15TB only at an assumed 2.5:1 compression ratio; already-compressed files may see little or no reduction. LTO-8 also supports a separate M8 media mode. Confirm application and initialization support before planning an M8 workflow.
Choose software for your workflow
Use an application that supports LTO-8 and your complete host configuration. Compatibility depends on the application version, operating system, SAS HBA, drivers and media format. Check the software vendor’s current requirements before installation; an application name alone does not establish support.
Veeam, NetBackup, Commvault, Arcserve and Retrospect are examples to evaluate for the complete configuration. Confirm tape-device support and any required backup or tape licensing for your chosen version.
XPNTL SOLO, Hedge Canister, Archiware P5, YoYotta, XenData, myLTO and compatible LTFS tools are examples to evaluate, not a certification list. LTFS file access requires compatible software and drivers; drag-and-drop behavior depends on the application.
XPNTL SOLO is available as a perpetual LTFS software license with one year of software updates and support. The licensed version remains usable after that coverage ends. Review current XPNTL SOLO licensing and redemption options.
Included-license redemption is for eligible MagStor hardware and requires eligibility and prior-redemption checks. Confirm eligibility for your SAS-1U-HL8 purchase with MagStor before assuming a license is included. Software coverage is separate from the drive’s hardware warranty; other applications require their own compatible licensing and setup.
